Molbrough – Nebo 240k’s

Personal Experiences Jun 12, 2008 No Comments

I’ll try to write this one in the third person. Muzza & Terry gathered their gear from the Molbrough pub early, groveled their burgers from the cafe, they set sail by 11.30 . This trail led us several days through Ogmore past Saint Laurence to the Connors Range. The old telegraph line was our next challenge, being the second steepest range in Aus. We busted our balls for two hours pushing and wrestling our mules up the rocky accent, only to come to a beautiful camping site with stuff all water polluted with cow manure.

The next day found us on a gravel road steadily making our way towards Nebo, lunch arrived so we pulled in to a little bridge with the best water we seen since the start of the trip. Kevin (70) and nephew Harrie pulled up for a chat and before we new it they invited us around for a billy, only a mile up at Colaroy Station. This was great HCT sandwiches hot tea to mark half a day in the saddle. The day finished of with 80k’s of gravel road and a massive fire in creek line, we sipped our hot chocolate while our eyes gasped at the stars. Yes I know it’s all starting to sound a bit gay; but what happens out bush…

Ok the internet cafe closes soon, so I’ll see how much I can write or stab at the keys

Terry & I caught up with Dietmar and Jenny at the Nebo pub, our eye’s where hanging out of our heads from the previous four days bush. Some how we managed to collect 35$$s from some birds at the pub. Nebo is amaisingly a small town with lots of industry, I bought four days of supplies at the local store and only for 80 bucks, shit at this rate ANZ will be broke soon.

Tips & Tricks

Personal Experiences Jun 01, 2008 No Comments

We have been on the trail for a iittle while and have learnt a heap of tricks which make our life easier, so compiled together they equal some tips for your next journey.

  • Oil – $14.95 in any biike shop, sewing machine oil $2.50 in most town supermarkets
  • Waterbottles – a strand of elastic to stop your bottles jumping out and extra bottles on your forks and trailer.
  • Re-supply – a good looking chick named Jenny with a caravan and transport
  • Balance – when using paniers or a trailer you need to weight the front of your bike
  • Emergency plans – lost, accident, brake down. So far two derailer hangers, jumping gears, lost people.
  • Cover up – it’s not too hot down here but it dose take a toll on your skin
  • Water – if you get a chance to fiil up do it
  • Weight – less is best, all you need is water, food and to be kept warm
  • Energy – f#@k the energy bars there too expensive, peanut butter, jam and a loaf of bread will do the same
  • Camping – set up camp two hours before sunset
  • Look – lookout for your mates, bikes, gear and health

I hope these little tips help. Muz!

Biloela – Mount Morgan

Personal Experiences Jun 01, 2008 1 Comment

The last few days have been a challange, straight up 60km bitumen from Biloela and 20km on dirt. Not a bad day, easy a fair amount of distance and an early set down. The 29th of May has been the day of all days. To start off a stick flicked up and took skin from Dietmars shin, then into a nice incline and a bit of pushing. We noticed the trail had alot of suck making the riding hard and after an hour after some navigational discomfort we again found a newly grated trail.

Thus morning started off with drizzle then rain. 200m on the grated trail caused Terry’s trailer wheel to clog with mud, then mine (Muzza’s) and Dietmar’s. The only conclusin was to clean the mess and ride throught the bush. I went trail blazing ahead… I’ll let the audio tell the rest;

Audio : Broken-Sole

The guys had a mulitude of thoughts and kept on going till late afternoon. I on the other hand with a broken derauler and no tools to shorten the chain for a singlespeed pushed/scooted my bike for 15k’s. This is where my previous army tracking skills came into lou once their track disapeared, I found them half hour latter in the creek line drinking out of cow poo lake.

The day into Mount Morgan went well with 68 slow k’s under the belt. With a night well slept.

I’ve never seen a Yowie

Personal Experiences Jun 01, 2008 1 Comment

I’ve never seen a Yowie, they tell me they are big, hairy and like to run around naked and clean them selfs…. in camp. This manly looking beast was only spotted afterwards while browsing throught our photographs. I’m freaked out that something could be watching us – what happens next?

Here are a couple more days and two weeks worht of images, happy browsing. Muz!

12 May 08
Another hard long day, I think we clocked my personal record of 40km now 85. The BNT followed mostly on gravel roads, a sharp turn up Hodges Rd led us through a pass on Pelton Range, it was tough as all bones mostly pushing and some slow riding as the gradient was steep on a winding 4×4 track. It’s deffinatly a difference with the Bob trailers, an hour later we arrived at the top with a fast track down hill the Bob bounced almost off the planet leaving me unstuck in a few scary situations.
Mulaine Pub was our lunch stop. This is where our detour started to bypass the unpassable mountain ranges, locked gates and angry goats. 45 more k’s sore thighs and bums.

13 May 08
A night at the old christain centre dedicated by Reg Crust a local farmer in the valleys of Mt Silvia. We awoke to dozen farm hands planting cauliflower with son Brian Crust now leading the way. It’s great to have a venue like this for us to use, simple things like showers, toilets and the wokers smoko room with a kettle.

Reg came around at 6:30 for a chat about the BNT and a great storie on how he dedicated his time latter in life to the lord and helping others. This storie was deffinatley an experience which can only be told by Reg and your experience on the BNT. This moringin we were straight into the ride with an exasperating five hundred metre altitude climb over two k’s. We all had our own way of tackling this geological feature, I would ride 100m slowly and pull up to rest, Terry would ride till he could ride now more. Calan and Dave started pushing from the bottom and when the incline declined theyed ride. Tony wih his panniers zoomed to the top. I don’t think experience or fitness matters, pain hurts us all.
After all this we rolled eight k’s down through a valley to our camp at the bottem end of Ma Ma Creek, another creek with no water.

Random days of Terry Montgomery’s life

Day 5, 14 May 2008, Ma Ma Creek to Toowoomba Booked into the Ambasadore Motel 56 J 0410156-6932803
Another grueling day pushing bikes up hills and riding through narrow tracks with lantana and following a trail marker that pointed in the wrong direction. Forced to divert from asection of the trail because this was now a construction site. A bad day for Calan. He hit the wall on the toowoomba range. At the top, he noticed that he had the trailer brake 0n.

Day 8 17 May 2008,
Terry decided to detour direct to kilkivan via the highway. More parts were ordered and Terry’s son Adam collected them up took them out to terry who was riding towards Kilkivan. Terry returned to the Sunshine Coast to fix the bike. Muzza Calan and Dave continued on the trail towards Kilkivan.

Day 12, 21 May 2008, R318 to Eliot Camped at 56 J 0436491-7179581
Nice day riding with forrestry trails and undulating countryside. The residents at Eliot were very helpful. Allowed us to camp at the rural fire station property, offered us hot showers and food which we gratefully accepted. We all signed the visitors book and purchased a few beers from the fire Brigade.

With love Terry!
